Emmanuel's Confirmation program for youth generally consists of 3 years of study which focus on general Bible knowledge and an understanding of Luther's Small Catechism. The purpose of the program is not to assess a certain amount of head knowledge, but rather to facilitate a love for God's Word and a desire to live a life of faith that will last for a lifetime. Students generally begin the program in either 5th or 6th grade.
Year 1 - A general Bible overview with classes meeting one evening every other week from September - April
Years 2 & 3 - These classes meet one evening every week from September - May and over the course of the two years cover the 6 Chief Parts of Luther's Small Catechism, as well as many other topics that relate to living the Christian life today and throughout life.
One requirement of the program is to complete sermon notes to better learn how to listen to the Word of God being proclaimed from the pulpit. Copies of the sermon notes sheet can be found here.
The culmination of the Confirmation program is the Day of Pentecost at the end of the third year of the program where students will publicly profess their faith and their desire to be members of the congregation at Emmanuel. Students who are ready for this milestone will also receive the Lord's Supper for the first time on this day. All students and families are encouraged not to see this as the end of a journey, but as the beginning of a new stage in their lives of continually receiving the gifts that God provides for us in Word and Sacrament.
During the two summers between years of the program, confirmands are encouraged to attend Confirmation Camp as a group. This two day experience at Camp Luther in Northern Wisconsin helps students to learn and grow in their faith while being reminded that the church is bigger than our congregation in Adell.
